Enterprise Device Alliance Members Support iOS 5
December 14, 2011—The member companies
of the Enterprise Device Alliance (EDA) today announced their support for
Apple’s iOS 5 in enterprise environments. The member companies are committed to
providing support for iPhones and iPads that use iOS 5 in enterprise and
business deployments within a Windows IT infrastructure. The Alliance members
help organizations solve multiple business challenges by providing
multi-platform solutions such as systems lifecycle management—Absolute
Software; identity & access management—Centrify; mobile file
management—GroupLogic; and IT service management—Web Help Desk.
Enterprise-class organizations can now use solutions from
the members of the Enterprise Device Alliance to leverage their Microsoft
Windows IT environments to provide file access to iOS devices and management
services to meet IT security and standards.
“The pervasive use of iPhones and the emerging adoption
of iPads in large organizations means that IT administrators need to be able to
secure and manage the devices while still helping their users get services,”
said T. Reid Lewis, president of the Enterprise Device Alliance. “The Alliance
members provide solutions that help IT management leverage their current
expertise and infrastructure to streamline the deployment, integration, and
management of Apple’s popular mobile devices in the enterprise environment.”
In a recent survey conducted by the Enterprise Device
Alliance, IT administrators asserted that over 80% of large organizations are
deploying or piloting iPads (Survey results). The inevitability of widespread
adoption of iOS devices has these administrators concerned about security and
management.
The status and plans of the member companies’ support for
iOS 5 follow:
Absolute Software
Absolute® Manage by Absolute Software, a single console
providing full management of Windows and Mac computers, as well as Android and
iOS devices, has been updated to include full support for iOS 5. Now
customers can restrict email so that it can’t be copied outside of company
accounts, including enforcement of S/MIME encryption. With managed apps
support, administrators can push both commercial and in-house (enterprise) apps
to devices. And they can be remotely removed including the automated removal of
apps if a device leaves the company. And if a device leaves the company the
apps can be remotely removed automatically. Even back-up data associated with
these apps can be blocked. Controlling company data on a device has been
improved by restricting or preventing iCloud functions. Best of all, Absolute
Manage provides a menu-driven wizard that supports the new Apple APNS
certificate process. The new process does not require membership in the Apple
iOS Developer Enterprise program. Now Administrators can obtain and install the
required certificate with a just a few mouse-clicks. For more information: Absolute Manage MDM

Web Help Desk
Ever vigilant to stay technically cutting edge and vendor
neutral, the Web Help Desk provides full support for iOS 5 in multiple
capacities. The Web Help Desk web application utilizes mobile Safari
recognition to provide IT staff with a leaner, more efficient mobile user
interface than its desktop browser counterpart. However, when the situation
calls for it, IT staff may employ the expanded capabilities of the full browser
based feature set. Moreover, the introduction of iOS 5 generated no ill effects
to the popular Web Help Desk Mobile app for iPhone and iPad. The native iOS 5
Web Help Desk app, free in the iTunes App Store, continues to provide the
perfect blend of features and push notifications to ITSM professionals who
remain untethered and on the go. For information: Web Help Desk Software
